A slicer is the program that turns a model into machine motion. This page compares four common open tools from their public documentation as reviewed on 16 September 2026. It is not a first-hand print test and it does not ship profiles.
If you need a calibration habit after you pick a slicer, use Calibration: keep a baseline worth returning to.
Software in this comparison
| Program | Documentation reviewed | What that documentation is for |
|---|---|---|
| PrusaSlicer | Prusa Help, import and project workflow | Opening a model, assigning a printer profile, exporting G-code |
| Bambu Studio | Bambu Lab wiki quick start | Connecting a Bambu machine and sending a job from the studio |
| UltiMaker Cura | UltiMaker support, “How to slice a 3D model” | Generic FDM slicing with marketplace profiles |
| OrcaSlicer | Project wiki | A Bambu-Studio-derived slicer with its own settings tree |
Versions change. Treat the linked pages as the dated snapshot, not a promise that every menu label still matches.
Three tasks the documentation actually answers
Getting a file in. Prusa documents importing a model into PrusaSlicer and then selecting a printer profile. Import a model Cura’s support article walks through opening a model, choosing a printer, and slicing. Cura slicing
Getting a file to the machine. Bambu’s quick start treats the studio, the printer, and the cloud or LAN connection as one workflow. Bambu Studio quick start PrusaSlicer and Cura still describe export-to-G-code or removable media as valid paths. Those are different ownership models, not quality scores.
Where calibration lives. None of these pages replace a measured first-layer check. OrcaSlicer’s wiki is a setting reference, not a coupon procedure. OrcaSlicer wiki
What was not tested
No Benchy, no retraction tower, and no timed job was printed for this article. Do not download a “recommended profile” from this site; none was generated. If a YouTube export and your machine’s current firmware disagree, keep the machine’s dated profile and record the difference.
Use this guide to pick which manual to open. Use the calibration guide to keep a baseline after the first successful print.
